A closer look at the new National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS-UD). Does its enactment spell the removal of heritage overlays in central suburbs like Ponsonby, to be replaced by six level apartments next to villas?
The new National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS-UD) came into effect in August 2020. The intention – to unlock our cities, increase urban land competitiveness, and create across-the-board flexible zoning – will shift our cities to being more connected and accessible.
The NPS-UD will likely have a transformative effect on traditionally heritage, single dwelling zoned city fringe suburbs like Ponsonby.
Join UDINZ on Thursday 17th June between 4-6pm at The Sapphire Room in Ponsonby to hear from an expert panel on the NPS-UD, what it is, and what it could mean for intensification in suburbs like Ponsonby. And how will council, residents and the development community respond?
Chris Crow, urban economist at PwC will outline what the NPS-UD is about and what councils are being asked to do in response to it. This will be followed by a panel discussion on what flexible zoning could mean for Ponsonby, how will heritage be defined, and the pros and cons of development as per the NPS-UD’s intent for densification around transport links.
Panel members:
Chris Crow, Urban Economist, PwC
Geoff Cooper, GM Strategy, NZ Infrastructure Commission
Pippa Coom, Councillor, Auckland Council
Don Mathieson, Co-Chair, Herne Bay 1011 Residents Association
Colin Leuschke, Director, Leuschke Architects
Moderators: Andrew Crosby, CEO Universal Homes & Lisa Hinton, Director Context Architects
